1.
We recommend that all tenants place plastic over the entire cement
floor. This simple step forms a vapor barrier between your items
and the cement. Condensation will come up through the cement -
this naturally occurs and can only be stopped with some type of
non-porous barrier.
2.
We recommend a "keyed" lock over a combination lock.
You may choose which ever fits your needs.
3.
Do not store open food in your unit. This attracts rodents and
insects. You can help by not storing items that attract them.
If for any reason you would like d-Con in your unit, please see
the manager on duty.
4.
Providing your couches do not have large rounded arms, you save
storage space by putting them in the unit on end.
5.
When storing appliances, please make sure you have plastic under
them - they will not rust if you store them correctly. Wedge appliance
doors open. Always clean your stove before storing.
6.
After you have placed your items in the unit, do not cover them
with plastic. If you should want to cover them to protect them
from dust, use a "breathable" item such as an old sheet
or blanket. Remember: anything under plastic will hold moisture
under the plastic. It will make boxes soggy and promote mildew.
7.
Pack books flat to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly
on the floor. Books are heavy in bunches, so pack them in smaller
cartons for easy lifting.
8.
Take time when packing dishes and glasses. Place a layer of packing
paper inside the bottom and top of the cartons. Plates and glasses
should be wrapped individually. It's best to stack plates on edge.
9. Wipe the surface of bicycles, tools and other metal items with
a slightly oily rag to prevent rusting.
10.
Save the boxes your delicate holiday decorations were in when
you purchased them.
11.
Boxes are the best protection for your goods. Use uniform sizes
of boxes and stack them to maximize your storage space. Place
heaviest boxes on the bottom.
12.
Place frequently used items near the door and leave a walkway
to the rear of the space.
13.
Since you alone control access to your storage space, there are
some items which should never be placed in a storage unit. Among
them are: live animals, perishables, explosives and all flammable
liquids and fuels.
14.
If it's worth storing, it's worth protecting. Are your goods insured?
Ask the manager about self storage insurance at reasonable rates.
